I could never go back to a non-thinking-job now after writing for living. But being a writer is definitely harder and less glamorous than what I thought. There's no assisting voice-over giving clues as Carrie Bradshaw for example.
There's research, phone calls, interviews, reading, writing. Every now and then there are some free lunches and conferences. That's it. It's a job like any other. Just that you have to think.

i am a novice writer myself. and i am finding out that writing isn't really so much about writing as about marketing and business. i am naive and had no idea. i am presently trying to get my passion back for writing.

You know, it's funny really, how I wrote this piece -- unaware of Clarke's demise, KEE, only moments later to learn that he'd left us.

I have to be honest with you, though: I never read the book -- any of his writings, for that matter. My fascination for 2001: A Space Odyssey lies in Kubrick's craftsmanship. I can't say, in all honesty, that the story, as such, appealed to me, but the beauty of it… Now, there's something to admire, to revel in!

Stanley Kubrick's particular sense of aesthetics, like Tim Burton's, Akiro Kurosawas', Jim Jarmusch's and David Lynch's (to mention but a few), made all the difference.

I first saw 2001: A Space Odyssey some time during the mid-seventies, in my early teens, at which point I finally also got to see A Clockwork Orange. Both left the susceptible young Petterson seriously and permanently awestruck.

I won't argue with you there, Konrad, although I'm a little uncertain as to how political extremism ties in with psychological terms. It would be easy, of course, for every racist to plead criminally insane when indicted. I, for one, am a little reluctant to grant them the… uhm… pleasure?

Mute? Oh, yes! Instinctively I wanted to reply "Joy Division!", but I'm glad I double checked. They were on the Factory Records label, of course, sporting huge household names like New Order and the OMD, too (between us, though, I have to admit I soon tired of OMD).

It's not hard to sympathise with your sentiment towards ZTT, though. It's quite a matter of what some would call an acquired taste -- especially when it comes to The Art of Noise (whom I quite enjoy, actually) and, even for some, Propaganda. But, as I think I insinuated; very eighties only, most of it. In my view Trevor Horn "lost it" after that, I'm sorry to say.

As for Steve McQueen… I expect there's a reason why most Sprout followers, myself included, seem in perfect accord on that matter (I didn't put up that picture for nothing). :-)

We appear to be in almost boring agreement, Radiohode, yet I can't help but feeling like a mid-life crisis desperado, clinging to what -- to me -- music and youth (gone by) is all about. Then again, today's youngsters probably haven't got a clue what we're rambling on about, rendering us exonerated of such despicable accusations.

We all too often fall victims to the media's die-hard insistence that the Gen X phenomenon was something restricted to people in their twenties (no matter when), I suppose. But hey, it's us they're talking about. I'll give us that.

4AD (and Mute) is a sign of quality. But ZTT is to me a somewhat bitter pill. Some of it is quite ok, but it's easy to find artists, albums, songs too difficult to enjoy.
